The starting point of this Tracking is that students spend a lot of time listening to English music, but it is surprising how little some students understand of what their favourite artists are singing about. The aim of this Tracking is to improve that: both the technical understanding (listening skills) and the deeper analysis of themes and poetic devices (reading and literary competence) are practised in this book. Moreover, the Tracking tries to develop a critical attitude towards the quality and commercialisation of pop music and makes students aware of the role of pop music as the voice of changes in society or counterculture. For classes of modern languages, there is the extra possibility of a research competence assignment in pop song lyrics, which is not in the book itself but on diddit. Bekijk deze Tracking Language research The focus in this Tracking is double: on the one hand students learn about the essence of human communication (one-to-one, group and intercultural communication) and English in the world. Students also find out how languages evolve and they throw a glance at the future of language. on the other hand the Tracking also focuses on how to set up a research project. Students learn which steps to take to research languages. As a teacher you can choose to work with the whole class group or stimulate students to work in smaller groups. It's perfectly possible to skip parts in the Tracking, e.g. when certain SET are being put into practice in the French lesson. The extra exercises on diddit offer an ideal opportunity to differentiate within the group. Bekijk deze Tracking Literature research Literature study and research skill are interwoven in this tracking. Students learn about the function of literature and the literary communication situation. They study poetry, decode drama text and performance, and experience what happens when a novel is adapted for the screen. In between they learn to set up a literary research project. Each step is explained and exercises are included. As a teacher you can choose to work with the whole class group or stimulate students to work in smaller groups. Bekijk deze Tracking Science shapes reality In this Tracking students are introduced to the intrigating world of science and scientific work. They do not only learn to read and interpret scientific texts, they are also introduced to spotting flaws in pseudo science and the importance of reading critically. Of course, we teach them how to write down results of their research in a scientific way and how to apply the techniques of poster presentations to communicate their findings and projects. Using word maps students will be able to expand their vocabulary in a practical way. There’s also time for some relaxation, e.g. by following the adventures of an astronaut stranded on Mars. Bekijk deze Tracking Economy rules the world? More than ever the economy determines the well-being of people in our society. In this global economy, the language of business is English. Therefore students can combine these two by exploring the field of economy through English languages tasks. Students get to know the world of corporations and develop their own business skills, like making a business call or devising their own sales pitch. They critically read about and discuss the role of the economy in their lives. The Tracking works towards the challenge of students thinking up their own business concept, which will be worked out in a business promotion video as a final integrated language task. The lessons mainly aims at students who study economics, to transfer their knowledge from the economics class to English and the other way around. Bekijk deze Tracking Beyond (Human) Boundaries In Beyond (Human) Boundaries, the students get the chance to explore different fields of human sciences and investigate how we have become who we are, based on influences from the world we live in. How does your upbringing influence your choices in life? How can your mind be manipulated? Are we susceptible to peer pressure? What are the boundaries of communication based on our culture? Which cultural differences can we distinguish when it comes to our dating life? The goal is to let students approach these aspects critically and to become more aware of our similarities and differences. The tracking works towards a final integrated language task in which the students make a creative presentation of an alternative version of themselves: What if they were born and raised in another culture, with a different religion, in another era? The lessons mainly aim at students who study human sciences, but can equally be used as additional material in other study fields since it does not require any previous knowledge about the subjects dealt with in the tracking.
